28 – 29 July 2011. Despite having to cope with a flood emergency, the city of Marikina managed to impress a visiting delegation from two Indonesian cities, Kupang and Tarakan, who felt inspired for their replication of Marikina’s eco-saver project.

The delegation, consisting of representatives of the two cities as well as ADKASI and APEKSI, DELGOSEA staff and the national coaches, were very pleased to be able to finally visit their best practice partner city. Despite arriving on the heels of a devastating typhoon, relevant city officials took the time to meet them and explain the project to them, which was much appreciated. Marikina city had developed an ingenious concept, drawing on the cooperation with local schools to help collect recyclable waste, for dealing with the problem of household waste and encourage environmental awareness in the younger generation.

The visitors were very interested to hear about the way early waste management education had been implemented in the primary schools, confirming their notion that the elementary school level is vital in the awareness raising process. Hearing about the close coordination and collaboration between second-hand shops and the city’s garbage department gave the delegates some ideas to follow up on back home. During a visit to one of the participating schools, a discussion about the division of roles among parents, teachers and students provided even more food for thought for the touring party.

All participants agreed that the experience was invaluable – seeing the project in action after all these months studying it on paper and preparing the transfer concepts, really brought it all to life!
