Taking Inspiration from Pakkret

Taking Inspiration from Pakkret

News of Pakkret, one of DELGOSEA’s original Thai pilot cities, has spread to Singapore: on 10 May 2013, the municipality of Pakkret was proud to present their project for the conservation and development of the old waterfront market to Dr Eric Thompson, of the National University of Singapore.

As Tharee Kamuang, the former national coordinator of the DELGOSEA network in Thailand, reported, Dr Thompson, an Associate Professor and Chair of Graduate Studies at the Department of Sociology, found out about the activities in Pakkret via the DELGOSEA website. He was keen to learn more about the participatory approach to the preservation of cultural traditions as well as historical buildings and arranged a visit, enthusiastically supported and assisted by Ms Petchada Vejsri of Pakkret Municipality and Mr Worawut Sornmum of the National Municipal League of Thailand (MLT).

Dr Thompson was impressed by the achievements of Pakkret and interested in the background, as well as the DELGOSEA network. Further research in that area is planned, and it will hopefully not be his last visit to the city.
