Chiang Rai City, Thailand

ChiangRai

Chiang Rai at a Glance:

The cooperation between neighbouring local governments to address shared needs, illustrated by the local governments of Yagyakarta, Sieman and Bantul on Java, Indonesia, struck a chord with Chiang Rai, a city in Northern Thailand, that was looking for solutions to their solid waste management problem. The concept of different local government units (LGUs) working together proved highly relevant for that region, and a joint management committee – an administrative unit that had proved so successful in Indonesia – has been set up with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the joint management of solid waste. Chiang Rai has also been very active in getting the support of the local community, by, among other activities, putting on a recycling show to promote waste separation at source.
