Auf Wiedersehen Peter – and Willkommen Benedikt

DELGOSEA was saying an emotional goodbye to Peter Koeppinger during the last workshop in Vientiane, Laos, at the end of July 2014 – but also giving an enthusiastic welcome to his successor in Manila, Benedikt Seemann.

Peter Koeppinger retired from his position as Country Director Philippines of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) at the end of July and Benedikt Seemann has officially taken over the reigns at the KAS office on 1 August 2014. Peter was well-known to all network members: It was due to his efforts – jointly with his friends and colleagues from the core DELGOSEA partners - that the DELGOSEA network became first established and managed to secure the funding from the European Union that proved so vital for the success of the network in the first three years of its existence. As first as the project director, later than as network director, he was instrumental in shaping the nature of the network, giving policy impetus and suggesting the direction in which DELGOSEA could develop. Dr Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, DELGOSEA’s main partner, spoke for everybody present when she said: “DELGOSEA was your baby, Peter, and you helped it grow.”

Peter Koeppinger was appreciative: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as director of the DELGOSEA network and am very proud of all that we have jointly achieved over the past five and a half years. The network has matured and has become increasingly relevant for good local governance across Southeast Asia. I wish DELGOSEA and my successor the best of luck."

Benedikt Seemann who has came straight from Germany for his first posting in Asia, is an expert in local government issues and is keen to see the network prosper further and expand into more ASEAN countries: "I have been very impressed with what I have seen so far of the DELGOSEA network and can only applaud the commitment of the network members in advocating for good local governance in the region. Peter is, of course, a hard act to follow, but I am looking forward to taking an active role as treasurer of the new Network Council and to help shaping DELGOSEA's future."
