| News | DELGOSEA meets ASEAN

On January 24, representatives from the Partnership for Democratic Local Governance in Southeast Asia (DELGOSEA), the United Cities and Local Governments in Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) met the Head of the ASEAN Community & Corporate Affairs Department.

In an eagerly anticipated meeting, Dr. Rudolf Hauter from UCLG ASPAC, Ms. Susanne Stephan from DELGOSEA, and Dr. Jan Woischnik, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, were welcomed by their host, Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Mr. Bagas Hapsoro in Jakarta.

The four representatives discussed a possible involvement of ASEAN in the upcoming regional policy recommendation workshop on local governance, scheduled to take place from 3 – 4 May in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. DSG Hapsoro was eager to have ASEAN represented during the workshop organized jointly by DELGOSEA and the ‘Supporting Decentralization in Developing Countries’ project, managed by UCLG-ASPAC. The meeting also gave the opportunity to explore the possibilities for a more structured multi-stakeholder dialog on local governance in the ASEAN region. First ideas have been exchanged and the way forward discussed.

All sides were very happy with the outcome of the talks and, as DELGOSEA project manager Susanne Stephan summed up, ‘we are honored and looking forward to welcome ASEAN representatives at our regional workshop in early May.’ This is another step towards ensuring that DELGOSEA’s efforts to strengthen regional local governance can be sustained. Finally, DELGOSEA shared its publications on ‘Local Governance in Southeast Asia’ with the Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN.
